Most stores offer great discounts when you even online, but did you know you can even earn money on top of that? You sure can if you shop through a cash back site!!

Basically how it works is, you sign up with the cash back site (see below) and when your shopping online you can earn cash back if you shop through their site. The cash back is usually a percentage of your purchase but sometimes it may be a flat dollar amount. It’s so simple to do.

I suggest you sign up with more than one cash back site and then compare which one has the best deal. Sometimes they will be different. Some of them even start you off with money in your account!

My favorite cash back sites…

Ebates

Mr. Rebates

So make a note, put it on your monitor if you have to, but always shop through one of these sites when shopping on line. It’s free money so really you’d be silly not to!

You can get a lot of Trial Size or Travel Size items for FREE with coupons. Just look at the fine print. If it doesn’t say “not good on trial size” then you can’t use it on the trial size. But if there are no restrictions then you can! There are so many items you can get for FREE when using the coupon on the trial size. Manufacturers put restrictions on the coupons so if it’s not there then it’s perfectly legit!

Target and Walmart both have a huge trial size section along with most drug stores. If the coupon is for $1.00 off any size (or no restrictions) and the trial size is $.98 then you can still use the coupon. It will beep at the register and the cashier will have to override it. Most store policies will state that they will change the value of the coupon to the amount of the item making it free. That’s perfectly fine with me, though it is nice when they push it through and I get the overage. The store is going to get the entire value of the coupon back anyways.

So if you have a 4 coupons (because you buy more than one newspaper) for Dove Deodorant with out any restrictions on them, then you can get 4 FREE Trial Sizes instead of buying 1 Full Size product with only saving $1.00. They work just as good, just in a smaller size. Some things I’d actually prefer to have in the smaller size to toss into my purse.

And with the travel restrictions on what you can carry on, and more people carrying on their luggage due to the baggage costs, these trial sizes are perfect for traveling with!

I love drinking coffee and it’s something I don’t deny myself very often. I will admit I spend a lot on coffee sometimes and I really need to cut back on that spending. It’s the only thing I splurge on on a regular basis but sometimes you have to, right? (that’s what I tell myself to justify it! LOL).

The thing that can get very expensive at coffee shops is the gourmet drinks like the Expresso’s & Latte’s. My favorite is the Caramel Macchiato at Starbucks. I don’t have them too often mostly because I don’t have a local Starbucks but when I do go there I always get one! At $3.80 a pop for a grande (medium 16oz) they get very expensive pretty fast!

I purchased the Maxwell House Caramel Latte Macchiato T-Discs for Tassimo Coffeemakers (Pack of 2) from Amazon for $12.96. There are 16 total servings which comes out to $.81 a cup. Now I know that the initial cost of the Tassimo is pretty high but I saved $48 just on this purchase compared to stopping at Starbucks.

Right now you can get the Tassimo Single-Serve Coffee Brewer for only $99.99 with free shipping on Amazon so after 32 cups you’d have your money back for the cost of the Tassimo and then you’d be ahead.

Oh did I mention that the Maxwell House Caramel Latte Macchiato is really good?? Oh yeah it sure is! My 6 year old loves the way it smells so she’s always asking me when I will make another!

A few years ago, when my husband began his career in real estate, we basically became a one income family for a while as he built his business. Around the same time, we really began to become aware of how our choices affect our world. We just became a bit more conscious about what we bought as well as how much we were spending. What I realized is that it’s just all so connected. I’ll show you what I mean:

Individually Sized/Serving Size Items: Sure, if you’re counting calories like me, or carbs or whatever, it’s great to have some of the guess work taken out for you. Or if you have kids, I’m sure it’s easier to grab one of something rather than cut a portion size off or measure out a portion size. But think about all of the packaging that goes into those separate portion sizes. There’s a lot more plastic used in a package of individual 1 oz cheeses than if you bought a block of cheese. It’s also a whole lot cheaper to just buy the block of cheese. Check it out the next time you’re at the store. Listen, I know we’re all busy… But really, how long is it going to take you to cut up a block of cheese and stick it in the fridge? Then when you’re packing lunches, just grab a piece. You can apply this idea to lots of things… yogurt, pretzels, cereal, baby carrots, crackers… You get the idea.

The Bulk Aisle: Not all stores have a bulk aisle, but if you are lucky enough to have one in your local store, take advantage of it! We buy all of our grains, our oatmeal and some of our beans in the bulk aisle. It’s less expensive, and there’s no box or container to discard. You can even bring your own reusable bags to fill up.

New Stuff: Before you buy something new, always check sites like freecycle.org, craigslist.com, ebay.com, amazon.com and your local newspaper to see if anyone is selling a gently used version. Obviously some things you wouldn’t want to buy used (like a mattress) but electronics would be a good example of something you might want to save money and packaging on.

Share Books and Magazines: How many times have you gone back and re-read a book? I don’t think I’ve EVER done that. But I’ve certainly collected a lot of books over the years. I moved recently and definitely didn’t want to take all of those books with me, so I brought them to the office, put them in the kitchen, and sent an email out to the staff telling anyone who was interested to help themselves. My co-workers were thrilled, and even brought in some of their own to share. This type of exchange would work for lots of things… Movies, music, clothing. The possibilities are endless!

Simple changes like this can save you money but also important… These changes can create less clutter, less trash and help you feel good about your impact on our planet.

Recycling Centers: How I Get So Many Coupons For Free

One of the questions I get asked a lot is, “Where do you get all of these coupons from?” When people see me buying 24 boxes of pasta, it’s natural for them to wonder how I’m doing it. After all, it wouldn’t be very cost effective to buy 24 newspapers every week. There are lots of good ways to get extra coupons – trading coupons with other people, ordering from a clipping service – but the one that’s worked the best for me is visiting my local recycling center. This method, lovingly referred to as “Dumpster Diving”, involves scouring the recycling center’s newspaper bin for inserts. This may sound gross, scary, or just plain bizarre, so I’d like to explain a little more about it.

Yes, that’s me in front of the newspaper bin! I was first introduced to the concept of dumpster diving for coupons when I read this helpful thread on Hot Coupon World. They talked about how you could get loads of extra newspaper inserts by looking through the recycling bin. “That’s cool,” I thought, “But I’d never sift through the trash for coupons.”

A few months went by, and I kept thinking about how I could stockpile so much more, if only I had more copies of the paper. I did a lot of trading for coupons that I needed, but that can be time intensive and requires an investment in postage. All of a sudden, digging through the recycling bin didn’t seem like such a bad idea. My quest to save money won out, and I put my snobbery aside and decided to try it. Much to my surprise, the recycling center was clean, and had the newspaper all in one bin, separate from anything else. In fact, there’s even a little “Freecyle” area, where people leave things that they don’t need for others to use – I found a cool, working camera there once.

The newspaper bin was a coupon lovers dream: huge piles of newspaper, as far as the eye can see. It was a gold mine of inserts, and my box quickly filled up with coupons. And since it was just newspaper, there was no icky stuff lurking in the bin. I’m pretty uptight about cleanliness, so if I’m willing to do it, you know it’s not that bad. And the savings were immediate: having so many copies of the inserts allowed me to slash my budget even further. So how does a dumpster diving trip work?

As you can see, I bring two plastic bins with me. I pull out a mound of newspaper, and sift it into two piles: the inserts go in one box, the unwanted newspaper goes in another. After I sort through one pile, I dump out the unneeded paper and get another stack. In just 15 or 20 minutes, I can have a mound of great inserts. Sometimes I stay longer and fill the box to the brim. How often I go depends on my schedule – sometimes I’ll go once or twice in a week, sometimes weeks will pass without a trip. There’s usually several weeks worth of newspapers in the bin at any given time, so I can catch up with the inserts if I haven’t been there for a while. I’ve even found an insert from December of 2007 in there!! I guess some people hang onto their recycling for a long time.

I actually haven’t bought the newspaper for about a month or two, because I’ve been getting so many papers at the recycling center that there was no point. However, I’m going to start buying one copy per week again, because now that the weather is getting nastier, it’s not practical to go as often.

See how many inserts I got for 20 minutes worth of easy work? These trips save me so much money – if you got paid a hundred dollars for an hour’s worth of work, would it be worth it to you? It certainly is to me. So how do you get started? Here’s a few tips and tricks:

****Check your local rules and regulations: Every area has different policies regarding their recycling bins, so make sure that it’s OK to dumpster dive in your town.

Bring supplies: You’re going to want at least two big boxes to sort newspaper with. Or, if you prefer, you can load up a few boxes with paper, sort it at home, and then drop off the unused paper later. And don’t forget the hand sanitizer!

Leave the area better than you found it: I’m sure this goes without saying, but don’t make a mess. Be neat and clean about your dumpster diving, and don’t leave newspaper strewn about. If I find a cereal box or bottle thrown in the newspaper bin by mistake, I help out by putting it in the right bin.

Have fun! You’ve gotta laugh at the absurdity of digging through the recycling for coupons, but trust me – you’ll be saving too much money to care!

What do you guys think? Have you ever been dumpster diving?

Guest Post from Sarah at A Thrifty Mom about a question from one of her readers, She asked if Sarah ever gets sick of couponing. I know I have from time to time.

Question…
I have a question for every couponer out there. Do you ever get sick of couponing? I’m a stay at home mother of 3 and I’ve been couponing for about a year now and I’m starting to hate it. I have two weeks of inserts not cut and I haven’t even looked through yet. Am I in a coupon funk? I use to love clipping and organizing and seeing all my savings but now I’m loathing going to the supermarket. Has anyone ever gone through this before?

Answer…

YES YES YES!!!! As much as I love couponing even I get sick of it sometimes, here a few tips:

It’s ok to miss a sale- If you are like me you get a little rush every time you get a Thrifty deal. But it is best to take it slow, pick your top “Thrifty Deals” for the week and just try to snag those sale items.

Only shop 1 or 2 stores- It is FUN to get the hot item of the week at each store, but if you run to every store that offers a good deal you may have an awesome stockpile…but you WILL hit coupon burn out way to fast!

Don’t get behind on your clipping- I have to admit that clipping and putting away my coupons is my LEAST favorite job. But it should only take 30-60 min each week to do this. To view my video on how I clip my coupons click here…the only thing I do different now is staple them together before I cut them. If you do get really behind it is OK to just leave those weeks uncut…and start fresh ( you can always go back just clip the ones you need, but that way it is not so overwhelming)

Take a break- Yes I said it is OK to take a break. (but still check in my blog…wink) Before I wrote my blog I would take a few weeks off from couponing when life just got too busy. Live off your stock pile for a bit, that is what is there for right! All it takes is one trip to the store and paying FULL price for a cart of things I know I can get for free to get me excited to coupon again…but the break is nice.

Count your savings- Keep track of how much you are really saving. That is why I do my weekly budget review, it helps me see the big picture of how much I really save. It makes me feel like my hard work is really paying off…and yes proud of what I have done. It gives me the energy to keep it up!

Save for something fun- Take the money you are saving from couponing and put it towards something fun. Like a surprise family trip. Start out saving for something small like going to the movies, or night out with your hubby… so you can reap the rewards of saving.

Get a coupon buddy- I know lots of people shop with a friend, it is fun to hang out with your girl friends and save at the same time. OR I know some people coupon with a “buddy” ….you shop one week and your buddy shops the next week and share the weeks savings. That way you never miss out on the sale, but you only have to shop every other week.

What are your feelings on this….and what tips do you have? Would love to hear from you all!

Mary from Couponers United recently posted about how to make liquid soap out of bar soap. We are a liquid soap family but it’s not always the best deal. I never knew you could turn a bar of soap into liquid soap until I read this post. And it’s so easy! Since you can get bar soap really cheap sometimes, this would be a great way to cut the cost of something you use everyday!

Supplies needed: 1 bar of soap, pan, grater, 2 cups of water

Grate the bar of soap into pan

Add 2 cups of water and melt over medium heat

Allow to cool..you can fill two to three hand soap dispensers! Super easy.

I will be trying this as soon as I get back from BlogHer. I have so many bars of soap that I got for FREE or close to free and I can’t wait to put them to use in my soap dispenser!

Make sure when using your coupons you check the fine print. If it doesn’t say “not good on trial size” then you can use it on the trial size. There are so many items you can get for FREE when using the coupon on the trial size. Manufacturers put restrictions on the coupons so if it’s not there then it’s perfectly legit!

Target and Walmart both have a huge trial size section. Actually my CVS does too. If the coupon is for $1.00/1 any size (or no restrictions) and the trial size is $.98 then you can still use the coupon. It will beep at the register and the cashier will have to override it. Most store policies will state that they will change the value of the coupon to the amount of the item making it free. That’s perfectly fine with me though it is nice when they push it through and I get the overage. The store is going to get the entire value of the coupon back anyways.

So if you have a 4 coupons (because you buy more than one newspaper) for Dove Deodorant with out any restrictions on it, then you can get 4 FREE Trial Sizes instead of buying 1 Full Size one and only saving $1.00. They work just as good, just in a smaller size. Some things I’d actually prefer to have in the smaller size to toss into my purse.

I tell you about printable coupons as I find them, but of course I don’t know about every coupon there is. So how can you find other printable coupons that I may not mention? One way is to check the company website for the brand you use. A lot of them will have a coupon or two hosted right there on their site. While your there, sign up for their e-newsletter because when they add a new coupon, most times they will announce it in their e-newsletter. You may also want to “like” them on Facebook. I’m amazed at the amount of companies that are using Facebook to reach out to consumers and give them coupons.

You can also find coupons at Coupons.com, Redplum.com and Smartsource.com. I suggest you check them daily as they add new coupons all the time. They also take them down without any notice so if you see one you might use, then print it. They usually have about a 30 day expiration date.

There are a few things you may want to know when printing and using printable coupons:

You can almost always print a coupon twice by hitting the back arrow button. Sometimes you may get lucky and get a third, I always check just to see!

Set your printer so it only prints in black & white to save money. They do not have to be printed in color.

You can not make a photocopy of printable coupons!! This is completely illegal and when people do this, and get away with it, it costs the manufacturer money and in the end they will just end up pulling the coupons and not offer them anymore. When they release a coupon there are are certain amount of prints available. If they go beyond that number, it’s a loss for them.

Some companies will reset their coupons and let you print them again! I love when they do this.

You will have to download a program to print your coupons. There is no way around this. You computer won’t know what to do without the program. I’ve downloaded them all onto my computers but I also have Norton so I don’t worry so much. It’s completely up to you.

You can print 2 coupons per computer, so if you have more than one computer in your house, you can print more coupons! Nice bonus.

If you come across a coupon that is in a PDF format then I guess the company doesn’t care how many times the coupon is printed. However, look at the url of the coupon, it may not be a real coupon. Most of them will be hosted right on the company website, but of course there are exceptions. If you think it’s too good to be true, it probably is.

Most stores will except printable coupons but it’s up to them if they do or not. There may be one location of a chain store that won’t take them because they’ve had problems with printable coupons in the past. Your best bet is to ask when you get to the store before you waste your time.

And the most important thing I like to tell people is use scrap paper to print them. They don’t care what’s on the other side of the paper. My friends husband came home with boxes and boxes of his companies old letter head they were tossing out. He gave it to her to print coupons on. PERFECT!

I’d like to explain some of the benefits of having a stockpile. You almost NEVER have to pay full price for something when you need it because you are stockpiling when things are on sale, and hopefully with a coupon. You almost always have something on hand to cook for dinner, make for lunch or to put together a quick snack. And if you happen to have bad weather, you’ll be all set for food. Stockpiling DOES save you money, if you do it slowly. Don’t try to get everything in one shopping trip. It could take months to build up a good stockpile. One thing to remember is that just about everything has an expiration date. When my mother first began her stock pile, she quickly realized she couldn’t stock pile everything because some things don’t have a long shelf life, like salad dressings. So be careful and if the shelf life isn’t long, then don’t get more than you can use in that time period. Most sales happen in cycles so you’ll be able to get more at a good price again.

Stockpiling is not for everyone but for those who do want to try and build a stockpile, here are some ways to get it going.

How to begin your stockpile….

Figure out how much money you want to spend each week building up your stockpile. You can start with $20 if you’d like. With sales and coupons, $20 can go very far.

Make a list of the things you seem to use most often or run out of the most. Those are things you DO want to stockpile first. Remember, we aren’t’ just talking about food. You can stockpile health and beauty items too.

Again, don’t run out and buy everything at once. When the weekly sales flyer’s come, sit down and look to see if any of the items on your list are on sale that week.

Next you want to see if you have (or can get) coupons for those items. Coupons can come from many different sources…. The Sunday newspaper, Magazines, Boxes of products, the mail, printed from the Internet, from your family or friends and you can even purchase coupons on eBay or from a coupon clipping service.

To begin, I suggest you ONLY buy items you have coupons for that are on sale that week. Figure out how much you can get with the amount you set aside for your stockpile.

Repeat this each week until you have a good stockpile going. Then just replenish as needed.

As you build your stockpile you may find items that never have coupons that you really want to stockpile. That is OK, but ONLY buy them when they are on sale. Remember the purpose to a stockpile is to help you save money. There will be weeks where you can get items for FREE with the right sale and the right coupons. If that’s the case, go crazy and get as much as you want. But try to leave some in the store for the next person. I know I hate when I go buy something and there are no more left.

Saving money can be and is addicting. Be sure to teach everyone you know how to do it so they don’t take everything from your stockpile!

How about saving $387.03 & avoiding the gym this year, but still getting in shape? Here are some tips from esurance.com on how you can do just that!

Americans waste more than $15 billion a year on unused gym memberships. That’s a whole lot of money for absolutely nothing. The average gym membership costs $480 per year, but if you’re determined to get in shape this year, we put together a short list of affordable gym alternatives. Stick with the following suggestions and you could save $387.03:

Medicine ball – $36.99 Medicine ball exercises help to build muscle and burn fat, and you can do them almost anywhere. Suitable for all ages and fitness levels, medicine balls allow for improved range of motion, core strength, coordination, flexibility, joint integrity, and upper and lower body strength.

Workout games – $39.99 “Exergaming” is a fun, affordable, and increasingly popular way to get in shape. Games involve the player in dance, aerobics, kickboxing, sports, and martial arts. Like other forms of exercise, exergaming can help with weight loss and improve fitness and health.

Exercise bands – $15.99 Aside from being a great way to work out nearly every major muscle in your body, exercise or resistance bands are very affordable and so lightweight you can take them anywhere. Great for the hips, thighs, buttocks, arms, chest, back, and abs, you can also tailor the resistance to meet your specific fitness needs and goals.

Walking – $00.00 Incorporating just 10-15 minutes of walking into your daily routine helps improve health and wellness. A brisk 15-minute walk will burn at least 100 calories, and if you take 4 a day, you can burn as many calories as you would by walking steadily for an hour.

Make it your goal to spend only what you need to on health and fitness this year. Use these tips to save money on your workout routine and get a fast, free quote to see how much you could save on health insurance.

Here are 8 Tips for saving $$ on auto insurance courtesy of Esurance.com:

Ask your friends if they like their auto insurance companies (Facebook is one good way)

What are your needs? Answer a few questions and find out at Esurance Coverage Counselor.

Do you really need towing coverage? You may already have it from an auto club or credit card. Why pay twice?

Drive safely. Speeding tickets and fender benders only increase your auto insurance costs.

Mind the insurance gap. Gaps in coverage have been correlated with a higher risk of accidents, one of the factors that helps determine your rate.

Pay your non-auto insurance bills on time. One important rating factor, applicable in some states, is the credit-based insurance score. Statistics show that folks who pay their bills on time are generally better drivers.

Look for ways to save. Factors that may lower your rate include:

Factory-installed safety equipment (air bags, automatic seat belts, etc.)

Factory-installed anti-theft devices (car alarms, anti-theft devices, etc.)

Additional anti-theft equipment (certified car tracking systems)

Good students in certain age groups

Customize your coverage; no 2 people are alike. Buying a home, graduating from college, getting married, or you’re just not sure that you have the plan exactly right for you? Esurance’s Coverage Counselor tool can help you figure it all out.

Value is the new green. Consumers are still interested in saving the environment but the incessant bad news about the economy has changed everything. Now being frugal is fashionable and excessive consumption is out.

Value doesn’t necessarily mean the least expensive but reasonable quality at an affordable price. And value seems to be across all socio economic levels. It’s not just about saving money but is socially responsible spending. It’s about living within your means and not borrowing or spending more than you earn.

So what’s a cash strapped family to do when it comes to vacation? We’ve put together a list of 30 ways to pay for your vacation by cutting out spending that doesn’t add value to your life in order to afford a vacation that will recharge your batteries and bring you closer to your loved ones. True value indeed.

1. Have a garage sale. Or two.

2. Stop smoking, one pack a day will cost $1600 or more a year.

3. Don’t eat meat twice a week. When we were kids, a trip to Europe was a big thing. I had a friend whose family wasn’t wealthy and the way they saved up to go was by changing to powdered milk (instead of fresh).

4. Cut out the latte or specialty coffee. Instead, make coffee at home and bring it in a reusable travel cup. It’s good for your wallet and the environment.

5. Pack your lunch – this can save you up to $1000 / year.

6. Get a short-term second job.

7. Stop buying name brand toiletries and start buying in bulk. Costco has some great deals. Go with a friend and split the oversize packages.

8. Instead of buying that book or DVD, borrow it for free from the local library. Yearly savings: $200

9. Buy the least expensive gas. Generally there’s at least one gas station in town that’s 10 cents less a gallon than the other stations. If you purchase 20 gallons per week, that’s $104/year.

10. Turn the lights off and unplug appliances that aren’t in use. If you can’t unplug the appliances, buy a Smart Power Strip which stops drawing power when the appliance isn’t in use. The device will pay for itself within a few months.

11. Canceling gym memberships for the summer months- exercise outdoors instead- you can save at $20+a month depending on the gym.

12. Get to your own bank for all your ATM transactions. Most foreign bank transactions are at least $1.50 per transaction.

13. As your light bulbs need to be replaced, put in compact fluorescent bulbs. They last longer and save $60 in electricity costs over their lifetime. That’s PER bulb.

14. Turn down the heat or AC. For every degree you can save up to 5%
on your bill.

15. Set your washer to cold and save 50% of the cost to heat the water. Only partially dry your clothes and hang them to complete drying. Or put up a clothes line in the summer.

16. Book a package, shop for a deal. Bundling air, hotel and rental car will usually save over booking each individually.

17. Really low on funds this year? Vacation close to home. You’ll save on airfare and possibly hotel rates if you live in a tourist area. Many of us haven’t visited the top tourist attractions in our own hometowns.

18. Consider camping. Although with budget cutbacks, reservations may be tough to get. Book early.

19. Consider staying in a hostel that offers private rooms for couples or families.

20. Consider houseswapping. Instead of paying a hotel bill, swap your house with another family and have all the comforts of home plus the added bonus of being able to save on meals.

21. Drop the land line. You can generally save at least $50/month. Most people have cell phones that they use all the time anyway.

22. Not ready to drop the land line? Can you live without caller id, voice mail and call waiting? Typically these charges are $10, $20 or more per month.

23. Drop the premium channels or cable altogether. That adds up to another $50 or more per month.

24. Cook at home more often. Eating out, even drive through fast food, really adds up, both in dollars and calories.

25. Plan your meals to maximize use of ingredients. Plan your grocery shopping and go as seldom as possible. You’ll save by not buying impulsively.

26. Most towns have a clipper magazine or entertainment book. Use the coupons to save on your meals out.

27. Use coupons for grocery purchases, restaurants and even travel.

28. Before you buy anything, go online and search for “product” coupon code or promo code. Typically you can find savings from 5% – 25%.

29. Carpool. It saves on gas and wear and tear on your car.

30. Check out Best Travel Deals . Net for free movies, coupons, last minute sales and jaw dropping deals.

Guest Post by Shel Horowitz

When I travel, I usually stay in the home of a total stranger-a member of the homestay network I’ve been part of since 1983.

Why?

You get a much stronger sense of a place and its people; you live as they do for a few days, in a real neighborhood

You get steered away from tourist rip-offs and toward fascinating, offbeat destinations you might have never known about on your own

You sometimes make new friends

Sometimes, your host can hook you up with key contacts in your interest areas (we’ve hooked visitors up with mediators, body workers, local historians, art gallery owners-and when we’ve traveled, our hosts have connected us with peace and environmental activists, musicians, and writers

The world becomes smaller as you immerse yourself in another culture, another way of life

And of course, you save a BIG pile of money! From $50 or so per night in rural areas on up to several hundred dollars a night in the world’s great cities. If we average just 10 homestay nights a year, and the average cost of a hotel would have been $100, that means we save $1000 per year.

Do I worry about staying with strangers, or having them stay with me? No-someone vetted them.

Our group, Servas , was set up to promote peace and intercultural understanding, and offers homestays in at least 128 countries. We’ve met locals, shared meals and companionship; sometimes, we’ve maintained contact for years.

We’ve done homestays in/near Paris, Seville, Prague, London, Copenhagen, Pisa, Athens, Toulon (France), Zurich, Cinque Terra (Italy) several places in Mexico, Israel, and Wales-and throughout the U.S. and Canada.

With Servas, you can travel, host, or both. We’ve chosen both, and our lives have been much enriched by occasional visitors from around the world. Typically, stays are two or three nights long; no money changes hands. (We usually bring a small gift-bread, wine, fruit, or a book we’ve written-but it’s not obligatory.) Other homestay groups might work a bit differently: some offer longer stays, some charge a small fee per night.
Hosts usually spend time with you during and after dinner, and perhaps at breakfast. At other times, you’re on your own.

Eight favorite Servas travel memories:

Going to a school talent show-in Welsh-with our hosts who lived in a 400-year-old stone house in the wilds of Snowdonia, Wales.

Being pleasantly surrounded by a dozen very tame horses near Boulder, Colorado, and watching my children ride-bareback.

Watching Rob Reiner’s “The Robber Bride” dubbed in Spanish with hosts in Seville, Spain-and not realizing until halfway through that it was a comedy.

A long and passionate discussion of Middle East politics with Palestinian hosts in an Arab village in Israel.

Getting a bouzouki and piano concert from our host family’s two teenage sons in Athens.

Touring a private collection of thousands of exquisite Native American and Asian art pieces-the owners are working on setting up a museum for it-with hosts in Colorado (friends of the collectors).

Eating authentic homemade couscous in the apartment of a Moroccan graduate student, our host in Paris.

Staying in mansions, private guest houses, a working farm, a college dormitory, a converted churchŠ

In short, the people we meet, the adventures they give us, and the sights they tell us to see or avoid give us a far richer travel experience than we’d otherwise have.

Last minute hotel deals are often some of the best you can find. While hotels may offer specific discounts ahead of time, the real deals are booked just before your stay, often within a week or two. These deals are perfect for the more spontaneous traveler. They could also be used to extend your vacation if you are having a blast and want to stick around to take advantage of a good bargain.

Why do these last minute hotel deals exist? Well, there are a few reasons that hotels may offer them.

Cancellations

It’s not uncommon for wedding parties, family reunions and convention groups to book a block of rooms for a specific date. If they later cancel, the hotel scrambles to fill the spaces, usually by offering a very drastic and last minute discount.

This can also occur when a large number of people cancel individually. This could be for no particular reason, just random coincidence, but it also tends to happen when people are scared off travel for a while, because of terrorist attacks, weather, or even airfare hikes. Whatever the reason, the cancellations are good news for you, the guest. They mean you get a great room for a fraction of the price.

Unexplained Lack of Bookings

Sometimes, even in the height of the tourist season, hotels can find themselves with a number of empty rooms. To prevent losses, they will often fill those at a much lower price, but you’ll need to move fast. These prices may come up just a few days before you want to travel, so you’ll also need to keep your eyes open.

Promotion

While most of the time a special promo will be run ahead of time, in some cases, a hotel will decide to capitalize on a special date and offer last minute hotel deals to help boost visibility in the market. Look out for special deals that are set up for holidays and special events like the Super Bowl. They will usually only last for a couple of days, but may be valid for a while after the promotion ends.

With any last minute hotel deals, it’s imperative to make a decision fairly quickly. You also need to be flexible. If you find a great hotel deal that is out of the way of where you’d planned to stay, you might need to reevaluate your priorities and stay in the cheaper hotel, even if it is slightly less convenient. Most deals are available online, so you will want to do frequent searches and make sure to stay on top of any potential last minute hotel deals.

Guest Post by Bethany North

You may be surprised at how easy it is to save money around the house when you put your mind to it! The first change that my boyfriend and I made was to go down to a single car within our home. Not everyone has this option, but my boyfriend works about a mile away from our house, and I work at home. It is always convenient to have two cars, but one of our cars was constantly sitting there useless because we didn’t use it.

We sold our second vehicle on Craigslist, and we didn’t even make a profit off of it. We just sold it at an amount where we could pay off what was owed on it so that we wouldn’t have to pay that car payment any longer. This idea isn’t for everyone, but it was a great choice for us because it took away a car payment that was several hundred dollars a month. By only using one car, we are also saving a great amount on gas since we are only caring for one vehicle. Over the course of a year, we saved about $3900 on gas and car payments. This may not be the ideal option for a large family, but any couples that can do this definitely should because it makes a significant difference in your finances!

On top of that, there are many other ways to save money on household items. We normally like to spend a lot of time at home, which saves money on going out. When you are homebodies, you have the opportunity to invest in some nicer things around your house, like a big screen TV, so you don’t even need to go out. As far as our television watching goes, we have started ordering DVD series of TV shows on eBay so that we can watch them in their entirety. When we are done with them, we sell them back on eBay since we won’t watch them again. The entire cost for watching a full season of a prime time TV show is almost nothing when you resell it on eBay. You may even have the potential to make a profit!

Lastly, to save money on household indulgences like wine, it is surprisingly worthwhile to buy boxed wine. I have read up on boxed wine, and it is actually a great method for packaging wine so that it stays fresh and keeps it from being oxidized. If you love a few glasses of wine on a nightly basis, it may be quite expensive to buy bottle after bottle. We regularly purchase eco-friendly boxes of wine for around $15, and they can last up to two weeks. If you compare this to purchasing three bottles of $10 wine a week, you will be saving about $1080 per year on wine!

The bottom line is that if you want to save a little bit of extra money for a larger TV or a vacation, then you easily have the opportunity to do so when you make little tweaks in your household purchases. The best part of all is that you will not be sacrificing quality because you will be using your money for items that you really want!

Have you found other ways to save around the house? I’d love to hear them!

Saving money can be a lot of work, especially when you first begin. I’ve received several emails from readers that recently found me after an article I was mentioned in, and a lot of them don’t know where to begin and feel extremely overwhelmed after going through my blog.

It’s OK if you feel this way, you should! If this is all new to you then I don’t expect you to be able to go out to a store tomorrow and save $50. It’s just not possible for most to start out that way.

I will say this. Figure out what you want to do, where you want to start and how much time and effort you want to put into it. You can begin by making yourself a money saving guide and include areas you’d like to save money so you have a starting off point and over time you can add to it.

Here are a few suggestions to get you started. You can choose to do one or more of these ideas but don’t take on more than you can handle….

Pick one store and try that out for a few weeks or a month and the add another store. Learn how to save money using Extra Care Bucks at CVS or Register Rewards at Walgreens. You don’t even need to combine these with coupons yet if you’d like. You will still save money.

For a few weeks just clip printable coupons and use before you move onto sorting through the Sunday coupon inserts. There are a lot of printable coupon sites and I’m sure you can find products you use. Even if you only use $10 worth of coupons in your first transaction, that’s $10 more you have than you would of buying the same products.

Only buy sale items and plan your meals around what’s on sale. If chicken breasts are on sale for $1.99 lb stock up and turn that into a few meals for the week. There is so much you can do with chicken as the main protein in your meals, you can even make lunches with chicken. If green peppers and carrots are on sale stock up on those and pull out your recipe book to see what you can do with them.

Just doing one or more of the above ideas will help you begin to save money. Once you get the hang of it you can slowly combine all of them together and shop 2-3 stores a week and buy what’s on sale using coupons. That’s what I do and you see how much I save.

One thing I do want to point out. If you’ve looked at any of my weekly reviews you’ll notice in the pictures that there’s not always ‘complete’ meals shown. That’s because I buy ahead when things are on sale and then plan my meals around what I have and sometimes combine that with what’s on sale that week.

Try it out and let us know how you do. If you have any questions or even ideas I might not have mentioned I’d love for you to leave a comment.

Eversave is the second largest online couponing site and the leading savings destination for women. At Eversave, they understand that everyone is looking to save a pretty penny these days. They have spent years finding deals to help women with their purchasing needs (and wants!). They even have a Chief Savings Officer, Julia Gaynor, who spends her time scouring the web looking for fantastic deals and teaching women how to save.

In honor of National Coupon month, Julia has put together “The Top Five Sneaky Tricks Retailers Don’t Want You to Know About”:

Ignore expiration dates – Retailers want you in the store to shop! Even if the date on your coupon has expired, always ask. Many retailers will honor savings deals post-expiration date.

Bulk buying deals – Many locations, especially grocery stores, will offer deals for buying in bulk (i.e. 10 for 10). Contrary to popular belief, retailers will often honor the sales price, even if you plan to buy fewer items than are listed in the original deal.

Stack coupons! You want to make sure that you have all the best coupons in your arsenal. Have a special place where you keep your coupons and stay updated on sales notices for all of your favorite retailers. It is in your best interest to print and click every coupon you find, even if you don’t need it right now. Stack up the coupons you’ve accumulated with store sales opportunities to really maximize savings. Coupon sites usually update their savings opportunities on a weekly basis, so make sure you’re keeping up with the latest and greatest offers. If you play your coupons right, you can not only get things for free, but you might even make a few extra bucks!

Bring retail competitor’s coupons with you when you shop. Many retailers will honor their rivals’ offers.

Shop with a mission! Retailers are strategic in the placement of products and deals throughout the store. Ever wonder why candy and gum are located in the checkout aisle? Walk out of the store with only what you intended to purchase.

Luckily my CVS, Kmart, Walgreens, Riteaid and Walmart are all located right next to each other. My Target is not far either. But on certain days or weeks I only have time to shop at one store. I wanted to compare pricing this week to decide which store is the best for me to visit first.

Another reason I compare is because of size vs. price. A lot of times it can be hard , as a newbie, to figure out what size is actually on sale. I find that looking at ads online are more clear than the paper ads. I have also become dependent on my trusty calculator to find more bang for my buck! (thanks to my husband for instilling this in me) In my head I can rate them “not a deal at all” “good deal” or ” great deal”.

Don’t be hard on yourself at first if you don’t get rock bottom prices. In the coming weeks and months you will learn how to find the best deals for your specific shopping list. We learn from our mistakes. This week alone I noticed two or three items that I only remembered after I was home. There was indeed a $1.00 off coupon somewhere on my kitchen table. Little good it does if it is sitting in a pile of clutter. Oh and Frugal RI Mama’s blog is always there for me if I have a question.

And my final reason is having a backup plan. If other commitments come up and I don’t get out until Thursday or Friday and inventory is low, then I need to make a little game plan change. It is good to have a backup. Don’t let this discourage you and make you feel like you wasted gas on a trip to the store.

Currently, I am just “stocking” up on good deals, trying to avoid impulse or last minute purchases and trying to save some money in the process on everyday items. Here are the items I am interested in for the week and how I see them as deals:

CVS: 3 PACK OF DIAL 1.99 = 66 CENTS EACH = Good Deal

TARGET: 12 PACK OF DIAL 4.99 = 41 CENTS EACH = Great Deal

CVS: ARM & HAMMER DETG = 6.99 FOR 2 BOGO- 50 OZ /32 LOADS = Good Deal

KMART: ARM & HAMMER DETG = 9.00 FOR 2 – 80 OZ/51 LOADS = Great Deal

Use $1.00 off one for each (printable coupon)

Kleenex

CVS: BOGO $2.39 ($1.19 a box)

KMART: 2 for $4 ($2.00 a box)

WALGREENS: 3 FOR $4.00 ($1.33 a box)

The next thing I do is check my coupons if I have a Kleenex coupon and then re-calculate. If I am already going to Kmart, I will make sure I have coupons and probably pick them up there. My next step is to review the Kmart ad again and see if there is anything else interesting.

Using coupons is pretty new to me but this week alone I saved $13.00 at my grocery store, $11.00 at Target and I got a whole bunch of things at Walgreens and saved 50% off my total order. Thanks Frugal RI Mama!!!!

Do you have a “game plan” every week?

Jodi is a wife and stay at home mom to a 4 year old boy. Lucky to be a stay at home mom, Jodi is also aware of the financial sacrifices of staying home full time. With changes in the economy and increasing monthly utility and grocery bills, Jodi has become more cautious of overspending. Considering herself thrifty, she shops clearance racks, clips coupons and shops at second hand stores. She enjoys sharing her new experiences with using coupons, comparing sale items and looking for bargains. Jodi is also a scrapbooker and blogs about her scrapbooking and her dialy life at Being Mrs Scrapdiva.

A Note from Frugal RI Mama: Sometimes going to 3 different stores each week can be more of a waste of gas money and time then you will get in savings. If you compare a few things that are on sale at each store, even though one thing might be more at one store than the other, if you make 1 trip and get them all at once, you may still save the most at one store when you factor in your time and gas. Just a thought for those of you that are short on time.

I wish I could be more strict with myself and only take the amount of money I want to spend with me. If I did, whenever we went shopping or we went out to eat, we’d never overspend. Maybe someday. I’m always afraid of not having enough money or maybe I’ll find something I need (do I ever really need anything? Probably not).

I’ve heard of the envelope system and I’ve even thought about using it. This way we designate what we want to spend on certain things and not anymore. Again, I’m afraid to limit myself so I haven’t done this yet. But perhaps I will, someday.

I was reading Being Frugal is Fabulous one day around the holidays and Nicole was talking about starting to use the envelope system. I asked her if she would do a guest post and share with us how she is doing it and how it’s working.

This is Nicole’s experience with using the Envelope System.

I have been using the cash envelope system for about five months now and it has absolutely transformed my family’s ability to save more money each month. My husband and I do not have the same spending habits. I am very frugal and always have been, he is much more comfortable spending money and likes to have things. This has been a struggle for us throughout our marriage, but using a cash budget has greatly helped this situation.

We decided on a very simple system. We will use #10 envelopes that will all be kept in one large Manila envelope. We are going to keep the majority of the money at home (in a safe place), and just grab what we need when we are out and about, so that we are not walking around with large amounts of cash all of the time. We are only going to have four categories for our envelopes:

Grocery

Household (this is for all money spent at stores such as Target and Walgreens, and it does include some grocery items. I didn’t want to have to separate every transaction, so I left a little extra room in the household budget to include some grocery items.)

Entertainment (this will be for all family entertainment, including eating out)

My hubbies fund (this will be money for his lunches and snacks)

To decide on the amounts, for the last 3 months I have made all purchases using my debit card, so that I could track our expenses and see how much we have been spending. Then I took those amounts and averaged them out and my husband and I came up with a number that we could both live with. I was a little too optimistic though and after not being able to make it to the end of the month the first two months, I added a little more money where we needed it.

At the beginning of each month, I withdraw the amount of cash that we need for the month and separate it into the 4 different envelopes. If there is anything left over at the end of the month, I roll into the next month.

This has worked out so wonderfully for us. I have to be selective of what “deals” I decide to buy. Even if things are at rock bottom prices, if I don’t have the money in it for my budget, then I will be out of luck. There are simply no more arguments about going out and doing and buying things. When the money is gone, it is gone.

Do you use the Envelope System? If so let us know how it works for you. Do you do it differently? Have you found it really helps? Or you just can’t seem to get it work for you?

I’ve been inspired by so many people to be even more frugal this year especially when it comes to the holidays and special occasions. There are so many ways we can save and still get so much. I was very happy with all the great deals I got this past Christmas on presents. I could of done even better had I started earlier in the year, but still I didn’t spend nearly as much as I normally do.

I put together a list of ways that we can be frugal when it comes to gift giving by using FREE gift cards that you can get through out the year.

A lot of credit cards will give you points you can then turn into gift cards. If you use your credit card to pay for your weekly shopping and gas purchases you can rack up points all year long and then cash them in for gift cards to do all your Holiday shopping. You just have to make sure you pay your credit card balances at the end of the month or it will defeat the purpose. There is also Discover which will give you 5% cash back for gas, groceries and travel and 1% cash back for everything else. Right now Discover has a $50 cash back bonus which is FREE Money! That money can just be stashed away for later in the year.

Another way to get gift cards is by doing surveys. A lot of survey companies will offer gift cards in exchange for doing surveys. If you let your balances add up all year long you can also use those for Holiday presents or you can use those to purchase Birthday presents throughout the year. At the end of this post I will list survey companies that I know of that pay you in gift cards. Of course there are so many Survey companies that pay cash too. If you leave the money in your account all year and just let it add up, you can withdraw it to buy gifts too, same as gift cards but CASH.

Swagbucks is another GREAT source for FREE gift cards. You can WIN FREE PRIZES just by searching the web. Swagbucks are digital dollars that you earn just for doing the things you’re already doing. You’ll never need another search engine! You just let you Swagbucks add up and cash them in for Gift Cards at the end of the year. You’ll be amazed how fast they add up too!

Another way to earn FREE gift cards is to get them as Incentives for trying products. Sometimes a dealership may offer you a gift card for test driving a vehicle. That’s pretty simple. You can also get gift cards by trying products or services and even for making purchases.

My Points is an online shopping rewards program. You can earn free rewards for taking surveys, shopping online, playing games & reading email? No catches! It’s free. You can save up all your points until the end of the year and cash them in for gift cards. They have a HUGE selection!

Survey Sites that pay in Gift Cards:

Opinion Outpost

Nielsen Home Scan

SayNation!

Daily Survey Panel

Valued Opinions

Squishy Cash – You can earn cash and also earn chips that you can cash in for gift cards too.

If you start planning now for the money you will spend later in the year, then you’ll have all you need and it will seem like you didn’t even spend anything at the Holidays.

My husband and I have been together for 10 years December 1st and we’ve been married 7 years. We have 2 small children so we don’t really get much time together, especially since my mother is the only one we’ll leave them with and she has a life so she can’t babysit all the time. We decided to spend the night out in honor of our 1o years together, but when we thought about it we both knew we really shouldn’t spend the money, especially with Christmas coming. I was determined to get our night away so I began looking into how we could do this without spending a lot of money. I was very successful in my search!

Here is what I did:

1. I applied for a Marriott Rewards Visa and with that we got 1 free night’s stay. It includes everything (tax too) = $.00
2. We get a free full Breakfast = $.00
3. I got a $25 gift card from Olive Garden as a reward from my visa card + there was a $4.00 coupon off two dinners in the inserts recently. Total to spend on Dinner: $29.00 (We will probably spend a bit more but it’s better than paying for the entire dinner).
4. We are going to go to Toys R Us and do a little Christmas shopping so I gathered up some coupons for that trip. I have (2) 15% off Any one toy coupons and (3) $3.00 gift cards my daughter got in the mail for her birthday (not sure why we got 3). We will do as many transactions as we have to in order to use all these coupons.
5. (2) Coupons for a free dessert when you buy a 20 oz coffee at Borders. Borders is near Toys R Us so we can go there and get some dessert when we buy a coffee.
6. We also plan on going to the movies so we are going to go to a early show to get the cheaper price. It’s been so long since we’ve gone to the movies I don’t even know how much that will cost us. Last time we went they were $6.00 each. I am still looking for coupons for that, but not sure if I will find anything. The movies will probably be the most expensive part of our weekend.

We are heading out this weekend, as long as no one else in my house gets sick. I am really looking forward to this, like I said, we don’t get to spend too much time alone together so it will be nice. I’m also happy to know that we are doing it with spending as little money as we possible can. I will let you know how much we do spend next week.

For one of my giveaways a few weeks back for a $10 CVS gift card, I asked readers to comment about a frugal gift idea. There were so many great ideas, I wanted to share them in case you missed them.

Homemade picture frames with family pictures in them especially with black & white pictures.

Gift baskets of things geared for the person and with coupons most of the ‘gifts’ are free.

Jars of spiced tea mix. You can buy the ingredients and jars in bulk, then prepare for a cheap and easy gift for friends and neighbors.

Homemade apple butter

Pillow cases for the kids in the family. Super easy. If you don’t have a pattern (and need one) just cut up an old one. Go to Walmart and buy a yard of fabric to match each kids intrest/style/personalilty/etc. It takes just a few minutes to sew them up, and the kids/teens LOVE getting them.

5×7 photo Christmas cards you designed yourself in photoshop. Send them off to be printed and you have a whole stack of Christmas cards for less than $0.50 each. (note from Frugal RI Mama – two of my favorite places to get photo cards and gifts are Shutterfly and Snapfish.
Homemade jams. Put a couple in a basket with a loaf of homemade bread.

Green and Red candies and treats.

A few other ideas for “frugal” gifts that I came up with:

You could join, get the 5 DVD’s for .49 each and give them as gifts. That could cover 5 people!!!

If you are getting someone an IPod for Christmas you could preload it with 25 FREE songs when you join emusic, or get them a subscription to emusic!

Photostamps are an awesome gift, especially for those hard to buy for people and especailly grandparents! The last two years in a row, we’ve recieved these from friends and family members with pictures of our girls on them. I save them for when we send Cards or Thank you notes. Everyone loves getting them!

Omaha Steaks is another favorite of mine to recieve. We received this from our aunt and uncle a couple of years ago and it was, if I remember correctly, 2 complete meals for 2. It included potato’s and veggies. They have a great special right now where you get 2 free gifts. This is another good gift for those that are hard to buy for or even for those who live far away. Then you don’t have to worry about shipping it once you buy it.
And then there is always Amazon, they have great deals all the time.

As I come across more Holiday Gift Ideas I will add to this post. Please let me know if you have an idea please share!

I began buying items in bulk about a year ago. I never thought I’d become a stockpiler, but I have. My first exposure to a stockpile was at my mother’s house a few years ago. I didn’t realize at the time that is what she was doing, I just thought she was crazy. When Stop and Shop and Shaw’s started with their 10/$10 promotions, my mother thought you had to buy 10 items so she began stockpiling the items she could get for $1.00. I laughed at her but whenever I’d go visit, I’d go and shop in her store. Now she laughs at me and shops at my store! Funny how things happen.

My friends husband does not understand the reason to buy things you don’t need immediately, or buying in bulk. Part of their situation is they don’t have room but if they decided to buy in bulk then they could find the room, but he doesn’t want too. That’s OK, it’s not for everyone but for those who do want to try and build a stockpile, here are some ways to get it going.

But first let me explain some of the benefits of having a stockpile.

The Sunday newspaper, Magazines, Boxes of products, the mail, printed from the Internet, from your family or friends and you can even purchase coupons on eBay or from a coupon clipping service, which I will explain more of later.

Where to get coupons…

I mentioned above that you can buy coupons on eBay or from a coupon clipping service. First let me explain, you aren’t actually buying the coupons, but you are paying a service for them to clip, sort and send you the coupons. They don’t ever cost as much as face value, usually just a small fee is attached to each coupon. If you look on eBay, just do a search for the product you are looking for and you’ll get (possibly a big) list of what’s for sale. Most people will combine shipping so you don’t pay a lot for more than one purchase. You can also do a Google search for ‘coupon clipping services’.

Trade with other people through message boards. The one I use the most is Hot Coupon World. You can also do a search on Google for ‘money saving forums’ and you’ll find more. Besides trading coupons, these forums are a wealth of information for saving money and using coupons.

Write, email or call the manufacturer and ask to be put on a mailing list for coupons. While you are contacting them, it’s always nice to let them know how much you enjoy their products. I’m sure they get a lot of complaint and very few complements. Some will even send you a coupon for a free item. Those are always nice. Make a list of who you contact so you know who sends you something and who doesn’t. You can probably contact them again after a year for more coupons.

Search on Google for printable coupons. When I find good one’s I will post them on this blog so you can always check Printable Coupons to see what I have found. You can find some printable coupons on the right sidebar of my blog all the time.

Send for as many free samples as you can because almost always they send a coupon too. I will post here also when I find some so check Free Samples to see what I’ve found.

Buy more than one Sunday paper and/or ask your friends, family and co-workers for their coupons. Keep the coupon sections on hand until they all expire, even if you don’t cut them all out because there might be a good sale down the road for something you don’t normally buy or you wanted to try, or that you can get free or even make money on. You never know when you might need a coupon.

Look in the stores while you shop. You can often find coupons right in front of the product or display that you can use then or save for later. If you take more than one, remember to leave some for other people. You can always get more the next time you go shopping.

Saving money can and is addicting. Be sure to teach everyone you know how to do it so they don’t take everything from your stockpile, unless of course it’s your mother or daughter. That’s OK. LOL

A little over a year ago, my best friend told me about a message board she read about where people were posting all sorts of ways to save money at CVS, one of my favorite stores. I read a ton of posts and told her, these people are crazy! I couldn’t believe the things they bought, stock piles they were creating and the money they were saving. I took a few pieces of advice and figured that was all I’d ever do.
For a few days I went back to the site to see what new information they were sharing. Well, a few days turned into everyday, pretty quickly. I found I was completely addicted to this website and I had to visit everyday to see what new posts were up. I found out they not only talk about deals at CVS, but at Rite Aid, Walgreen’s Walmart, Target, Stop and Shop, Shaws and just about every store out there! It’s amazing the deals you can get, just by taking a little or a lot of time to research. They also trade coupons which is a huge help. Not every body gets the same coupons in the Sunday paper. It depends on the region you are in. Plus you can find coupons in so many different places, I had not really thought about before.
I was already into saving money and using coupons before I found this site, but I am MORE into saving money and using coupons then I ever was before. I also have a HUGE stockpile of so many things that include toothpaste, shampoo, soap, baby wipes, toothbrushes, OTC drugs, cheerios, pasta sauce and so much more. I also share some of these items with friends and family, since I have more than I really need. A lot of this stuff is on sale very often.
So your wondering what this website is, right? Well it’s Hot Coupon World.
Check it out, the message board is a wealth of money saving knowledge. Even if you don’t have the time to commit to saving money full time, you can still get ideas to save a penny here and a penny there.
Happy Saving!

It is known that coupons can and will save you money. But if you’ve never used them before it can be really hard to figure out where to begin. It will take time each week to sort through all the ads, cut the coupons and make your lists. But if you start small and set aside just a little bit of time each week, it will get easier, trust me.

Here are a few ways to help get you started on your way to saving with coupons.

Where do I get coupons?

1. The best place to get coupons is in the Sunday Paper (some places you can buy them a day earlier on Sat, check with your local stores). If you can get your hands on a paper that only cost about $1.00 it’s worth it to grab a couple so you get more coupon inserts. But before you buy, take a quick look inside and make sure the coupons are there! Sometimes they are missing and that really stinks when you get home and there are no coupons. Ask your friends, family and neighbors to keep their coupon inserts if they don’t use them for you too!

2. You can also buy coupons on e-bay or from a coupon clipping service. When you ‘buy’ coupons, you are actually just paying for the cost of them cutting, sorting and shipping them, you don’t actually ‘buy’ the coupon.

3. Another source is in magazines. Especially parenting and home magazines.

4. You can also find a lot of coupons on products. Either to use when on that purchase, or it will be on the package for you to cut out, or inside, to use next time. Always check the inside of the boxes before you toss them. There may be a coupon.

5. You can also sign up for mailing lists to get coupons mailed to you either through USPS or email. A lot of times if you write to companies of products that you use and either complement them or perhaps complain about the product (please don’t make it up, it should be a real complaint) they will send you coupons and sometimes for FREE items!!! It’s real easy to write to them since most companies have websites and you can email them right from there. Maybe you could take 15 minutes a week and write to companies. Be sure to keep a list of who you write to and then note who sent you something.

6. My 2nd favorite place to get coupons is printable coupons online. A lot of companies will have printable coupons on their web sites and they will change often so check them every now and then. You can usually print out two copies of each coupon from each computer. If you have more than one computer print from each one if it’s an item you use often. You can also get printable coupons from SmartSource.com, Redplum.com and Coupons.com. . Most places will take printable coupons either in black and white or color. It’s best to check with your store about their printable coupon policy.

7. “Blinkies” – These are the coupons you find in the aisle with the food. The machine usually blinks, that’s why it’s called a blinkie machine.

8. Tearpad coupons are also found in stores. Sometimes on the shelf with the product, or on a display and even at the register. Look around, you never know where you’ll find them.

9. Food Stores that sell wine in the same store will sometimes have Wine Tags. These are coupons hanging around the neck of the wine bottle. Most times they are for dollars off certain products or types of products, like meats or produce. Some wine tags will require a wine purchase, but some don’t. You have to read the tag.

10. Catalina’s are coupons that print out at the register. You can get these at a lot of food stores; Walgreen’s and I recently heard that Rite Aid is starting to use them. These coupons are usually manufacturer’s coupons you can use at that store only. Sometimes you will get dollars off your next purchase if you buy certain products. Those are like cash.

Coupons can be found all around you so always keep an eye open!

Now that I have the coupons, what do I do?

Each week when you get your sale ads, sit down and go through to see what’s on sale and make yourself a list from each store. Cross reference all the lists to find the best deals since a lot of weeks you’ll find the same thing on sale in a few different places but the prices aren’t always the same. Then check to see if you have a coupon for these sale items. Keep in mind that some stores (like the food store) may double your coupons. So you want to pick the store where your coupons will go the furthest.

If you don’t normally use coupons, this is where you’ll see the difference. Let’s say your weekly food budget is $80. If you have $10 in coupons, then you can buy $10 more food (or put the $10 into the bank). Now if you don’t need $10 more in food and you don’t want to put it in the bank you can always stockpile a few items that are on sale that you have coupons for.

I try to only buy items that are on sale and that I have a coupon for. Of course there are some things that I do need that I don’t always have coupons for like meat, fruit and veggies. There are a few ways to also save on those items.

1. If you shop a certain day of the week, you can find a lot of meats marked down since it’s the last day they can sell them. This doesn’t mean that they are not good, it just means if you don’t cook it that day, you have to freeze it. You can freeze most meats for months! My local food store has a section where they break down the big packs of meat that they need to sell, season the meat, then repackage in smaller portions. A lot of times I can find 4 chicken thighs, 4 chicken legs or 2 split chicken breasts for less than $2.00 a pack! Pick up a few and toss them in the freezer! Check with the meat department to see what day or time of day they do their markdowns and shop then if you can.

2. Wine Tags – I mentioned Wine Tags above. A lot of these will be for dollars off meat, seafood or produce.

3. The produce department will also have markdowns on fruits and vegetables that need to be sold within a few days. If it’s something you are going to use right away, or can cook for later use, this is a great place to save money on produce. My store always has stuff on the mark down rack, but again, ask the produce department at your local store if there is a certain day where you might get the best mark down deals. If they just do it once a week then the produce is best the first day of the markdown.

4. The bakery department will also mark down yesterday’s bakery items. You can find some desserts that you can toss in the freezer for when you have company for half price. They also have bread that is just a day old. How many times do you buy a loaf of bread and then eat it over the next several days. It’s the same thing if it’s a day old! Why not pay half price instead. Ask the Bakery department when you can find the best deals on their markdowns too. Some of them may even do it at the end of the day and at that point it’s not even a day old yet!

What is stockpiling?

If you find a good sale on an item that you use a lot and you have coupons to make it free or next to free, then if your budget allows buy more than one. This way when you need it again before it goes on sale, you don’t have to pay full price for it. I usually stockpile when I have a coupon and it’s
on sale for nothing or next to nothing.

How about rebates? Are they worth the time?

Yes they are!! A lot of companies will give you a full rebate of an item, just to get you to try it hoping you’ll buy it again, but next time at full price. You should always take advantage of these items. It doesn’t take long to fill out the rebate and send it in. When that check arrives in the mail, you’ll be glad you did it.

Some places are making it even easier to send in rebates now Rite Aid. Almost every month they have a lot of items that you can get a rebate on. Some of them are full value and some are not. The ones with a full value rebate can even be money makers if you have a coupon for them. You enter these rebates online and it only takes seconds. All you need is the store receipt, nothing to mail in. At the end of the month, Rite Aid requires you to go into your account and actually request your rebate check. You have about a month to do it, and if you don’t they will automatically send it to you 30 days after the end of the month.

What about CVS? What’s the Extra Care Bucks (ECB’s) program all about?

In order to participate in the Extra Care Bucks program, you need to apply for an ECB’s card. You can do this at the register or online at cvs.com. It’s free. Extra Care Bucks (ECB’s) are like cash. It’s a coupon that will print out at the end of the cash register receipt that you can use next time like cash. This is the CVS way of offering rebates. If you buy a certain product you’ll get ECB’s. A lot of times the product will be on sale for the same price of the ECB’s so it’s FREE after ECB’s. And if you have a coupon then you’ll make money. For example, if the sale is for Colgate toothpaste and it’s on sale for $2.99 and you get $2.99 ECB’s and you have $1.00 manufacturer’s coupon then you’ll spend $1.99 for the Colgate ($2.99 less the $1.00 coupon) and get $2.99 ECB’s so really you made $1.00. This is a great way of maximizing your savings. Each week they have different ECB’s deals and you can use the ECB’s you receive one week to buy the items next week. That’s called Rolling your ECB’s. (You can see scenarios of how I use ECB’s on my website.)

How do I organize my coupons?

This is something I’ve changed over time, as I got more into coupons. I started out with just a little coupon organizer with different slots for each type of food. I got mine at the dollar store. As I started clipping more and more coupons I found I needed more room. I then moved onto a plastic container and filed them alphabetically. That worked for a while too but then I found I was spending way too much time cutting things out and sometimes find later on I wished I had cut out a coupon that I didn’t and now my inserts were gone. Then I began keeping the inserts each week until all the coupons were expired. In order to do this, you must stay organized. Write the date of the insert on the front page for quick reference. Then when you need a coupon, you know where to go and look for it. I do still cut coupons each week. I cut the ones I use most and like to have with me at all times. I have a business card file I keep in my purse with all those coupons sorted by type so they are easy to find.

You really need to figure out what system works for you. Any of the ones I listed are great systems. You can always keep changing like I did as you get better at this.
