Adoption is something near and dear to our family. And right now it’s front & center at Wendy’s and I’m hoping you’ll take some time to read about this amazing program they have going on in restaurants right now. If you head to Wendy’s, you’ll notice artwork on their cold beverage and specialty drink cups. The artwork was done by four children who have been adopted through the Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program. They are displaying the art work on the cups to highlight the power of foster care adoption.
The “moments” that the children drew, are Family First’s which, I am sure are very special memories for them with their families. This makes my heart feel so good! My husband was adopted as a new-born baby. He’s always known he was adopted and his mother would tell him that while he didn’t grow in her belly, he grew in her heart! I love that and really that’s where love comes from – our hearts! Why is Wendy’s doing this? Well Dave Thomas, the founder of Wendy’s, was adopted so he knew first-hand how important having a family is to a child. Dave founded the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption in 1992, which helps to find permanent homes for more than 130,000 children in foster care system in North America. That’s a lot of children looking for loving homes.
So far since they began in 1992, Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program has served more than 11,500 children and over 4,500 children have been adopted!!! That’s a wonderful number of families being brought together. Family is so important and everyone deserves one. My heart breaks to know there are children out there in foster care longing for families. I wish I could give them all homes!
Dave Thomas had a HUGE heart and he believed that children in foster care “aren’t someone else’s responsibility, they are our responsibility.” Because of that Wendy’s continues to support his belief through fundraising and collaboration with the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. Wendy’s Wonderful Kids Program was developed to focus on children who have been waiting the longest in the foster care system. Through the Wendy’s Wonderful Kids Program, special recruiters are hired to work on caseloads of children and give each child as much attention as he or she deserves. These recruiters employ aggressive practices and proven tactics, taking into account the needs of the children they serve, to find the children their forever homes. Children referred to the Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program are up to three times more likely to get adopted. Isn’t that amazing?!
Through the program, more than 5,000 children in foster care have been adopted into permanent, loving homes. Besides seeing the drawings on the cups in the stores, you can visit Wendy’s adoption page where more stories will come to life and you will become a part of the “family first” moment by listening to and watching an animated illustration. These videos are so touching and I loved watching them.
Below you can see Rigo’s story:
If I think back to when I was a kid, I’d have to say one of my favorite family moments was on Christmas Day. My brother and I wanted a race track – one where the cars moved themselves around the track. We both asked for it for Christmas and after we were done opening all our gifts, my dad said there was something else in the front hallway. We ran as quickly as we could and there it was, all set up and ready to go! There were 2 tracks next to each other so we could race our cars. I remember we had remote controls and we played with it all day long. I loved playing with that toy with my brother and it’s a memory I’ll always remember.
What are some of your favorite family moments?
