Product Name: Sunstar G.U.M. Oral Care Products
Product Information: Effective oral health starts with the gums. Today, gum disease is one of the most common dental problems. One of the issues with gum disease is that it often develops slowly and without pain. When plaque (tartar) is allowed to accumulate, infection will occur at the point where the gums attach to the teeth (called the “point of attachment”).
The mildest form of gum disease is gingivitis. It causes the gums to become red, swollen and bleed easily. There is usually little or no discomfort at this stage. Fortunately, gingivitis is reversible with professional treatment and proper oral hygiene (brushing, flossing and custom care).
Like any task, selecting the right tools will positively impact the outcome. Dental Professionals recommend a soft-bristled toothbrush to safely remove dental plaque. On the other hand, a hard-bristled brush, coupled with vigorous brushing can result in recession of the gums and the abrasion of tooth enamel and exposed root surfaces. Many of the GUM® brand toothbrushes have a Dome Trim® design so that when the toothbrush is positioned at a 45° angle to the teeth, the raised center bristles are able to clean below the gumline, an important factor in preventing gum disease. The size of the toothbrush is also important for effective brushing. Smaller mouths may require a toothbrush with a compact (smaller) head.
The bristle firmness and head size (regular, compact, sub-compact) will be printed on the packaging of the toothbrush.
Change your toothbrush at least every three months
Over time the bristles on the toothbrush exhibit signs of wear which reduces their plaque-removing abilities. The rate of wear will depend on a number of factors and will be unique to each person. However, as a guideline, replace your toothbrush every three months. Additionally, the mouth harbors a lot of bacteria and it is possible for it to be transferred to your toothbrush during use. Therefore, not only is it recommended to replace your toothbrush every 3 months but also thoroughly rinse your brush following each use to remove any remaining toothpaste and debris. When storing your toothbrush, it is recommended that it be in an upright position, off the counter top, with the ability to be air dried between uses. If more than one brush is stored in a holder, it is recommended that they be separated to avoid cross contamination. As a further point, at no time should toothbrushes be shared. This could result in the transference of bacteria from one individual to another.

My Thoughts:We received a variety of Sunstar G.U.M products for my family to try. I love when companies try to capture kids attention by making products they need to use, FUN! G.U.M teamed up with Crayola and has done that with a fun line of oral care products for kids. We received a Crayola Flashing Light Timer toothbrush to teach the kids how long they should be brushing. Most kids are guilty of running the toothbrush over their teeth quickly and saying they are done. I know my kids are! But using this toothbrush made it fun for them as they watched and kept brushing until the light stopped flashing. That’s very helpful for a busy parent who can’t stand over their children each time to make sure they brush correctly. It’s also a great tool to teach them over time how long they should brush. Eventually it will become a habit and they won’t need the timer anymore.
We also received a package of Crayola Pip-Squeak toothbrushes that have a suction cup base so the kids can stick it to the counter when they are done. I love this because that means the head of the toothbrush won’t touch the counter, which isn’t always clean and they love it because it’s more of a ‘fun’ thing to use rather than just a boring toothbrush. Things like this make looking forward to brushing their teeth, more exciting. At least it does for my girls, maybe they are odd!
Along with the products for the girls, we received some items as well including some Eez-Thru flossers, which I love because they are so much easier than using dental floss (the kids love them too, which is a HUGE plus, they ask to floss their teeth!) along with some Go-Betweens proxabrush cleaners, which I never used before and of course some toothbrushes. The Go-Betweens are pretty neat as they are a little brushes that help remove plaque and clean between braces, bridges and moderate, tight and wide tooth spaces. They work on the idea of floss, but with the bristles it probably gets even more out. They come with a cap so you can use it a few times. They recommend you replace each week.
